On 5 August 1949, the Bucks Advertiser reported that “Bebop has come to Aylesbury properly, officially and irrevocably”. Aylesbury Jazz Club had opened at the Comrades Club. Among the organisers, the Chairman is shown as Mr. L. Coxhill – which is likely to be Lol Coxhill, who was a large part of music in Aylesbury. Just over a year later, the club had decided on a change of name and direction. The Bucks Advertiser reported on 13 October 1950 that the jazz club committee had decided that the club should broaden its outlook and cater for a wider public of music fans. The article reported that “The music will still be mainly the same, refined with an accent on the individual musician. But the club will also cater for the modern dancing fan who wants more than a beat to dance to.”

Two years later, on 3 October 1952, the Bucks Herald reported on the opening of the Modern Music Club at the National Service Hostel on Bicester Road on Sunday 28 September 1952 – being “the first jazz club session to be held in Aylesbury for two years … Two years ago, the Aylesbury Jazz Club was disbanded, and since then the jazz enthusiasts of Aylesbury have had to travel as far afield as High Wycombe and Oxford for this type of music”.
